Roman, 10 years old
Diagnosis – Acute Myeloid Leukaemia
Roman was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in June 2024 after experiencing severe fatigue, weakness, and unexplained bruising. He was urgently transferred to a specialist centre, where he began intensive treatment.
After initial chemotherapy did not lead to remission, Roman underwent further treatment followed by a stem cell transplant from his mother in December 2024, his only chance for recovery. The post-transplant period was complex, marked by serious complications, including a severe bacterial infection and intestinal inflammation.
To support his recovery, Gift of Life funded 4 vials of the antibiotic Dificlir in February 2025, at a cost of £6,143. The treatment helped manage a life-threatening post-transplant infection and stabilise his condition.
Roman completed the full course of medication, which played a key role in overcoming complications. In October 2025, he was discharged from hospital and returned home, where he continues to receive maintenance therapy. This summer, Roman is scheduled to begin a rehabilitation programme to help him recover after his long journey of treatment.
